*SECTION1 Chikatsu Asuka and International Influence

*The End of the Tumuli*

The model is the excavation of the Togiyama Tumulus which was built 8 and a half centurlies ago in what is now Taishi-cho, Osaka Prefecture.
Things that were made of leather or cloth have long since rotted away. but excavators have found silver belt buckles and ornaments at the site.

The people who wore these things could be likened to the high officials of today that are active in the prefectural capitals throughout Japan.

The costumes people wore depended on rank. This custom began in the 7th century with the 12 rank system devised by Prince Shotoku.
People could tell the rank of an official by the color of his headdress or the color of his clothes.

Furthermore, when the law and bureaucratic systems were established, the number of officials increased. In turn, more costume and headdress colors, and more types of belts and accessories, were made to clearly distinguish the rank of each and every official.
