城南宮
[JONAN‐GU SHRINE]

京都市伏見区に〔鎮座〕し、〔ご祭神〕は国常立尊(くにのとこたちのみこと)・八干矛神(やちほこのかみ)・神功皇后(じんぐうこうごう)。平安遷都の際に都の守護神として創建されて以来、様々な〔歴史〕の舞台となった古社であり、現在も方除(ほうよけ)、建築守護、転宅・旅行・交通安全の神と篤く[信仰]されている。平安時代を偲ばせる優美な〔社殿コを取り巻いて広がる〔庭園〕─楽水苑(らくすいえん)一は、『源氏物語』に登場する100種類以上の草木の[花]に四季それぞれに彩られて趣深く美しい。また王朝の雅を伝える曲水の宴(きょくすいのうたげ)は〔年中行事〕の中で特に名高い。〔名物〕方除ぜんざいもおいしく、付近には鳥羽離官ゆかりの〔史跡〕が点在している。

Jonan-gu shrine is located in the south part of Kyoto and was founded in 794 as the guardian shrine of the Heian Capital. Toward the end of the Heian period around this area the Jonan Imperial Villa was built by the Ex-emperor Shirakawa and many magnificent buildings of noblemen and temples were constructed. This shrine was also deeply revered as the guardian deity of this villa and its festival was held in big scale and very famous.
The main shrine building and the Kaguraden(the hall of kagura dance) are designed accodinq to the architectural style of the end of the Heian period. These elegant constructions remind you of the prosperous age of the Jonan Imperial Villa.
The sacred garden named Rakusuien is designed in holy woods where the spirit of Shinto deities resides and worshippers can rest in a calm atmosphere and refresh themselves here. More than one hundred kinds of plants depicted in the Tale of Genji are planted and you can enjoy flowers throught the year. On April 29 and November 3. along a winding stream is held " Kyokusui-no-utage". an ancient-style open-air poetry party. Moreover this garden is divided into five different style areas and ycu can enjoy the essence of the Japanese Gardening.
